SUMMARY:Echoes of Earth: Building an Autonomous Environmental Lab for Acou
 stic Sensing
DESCRIPTION:Hudson Reynolds (Boston University); Alex Tuecke (Worcester Po
lytechnic Institute); Mike Sherman (University of Chicago); and Kate Keahe
y (Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), University of Chicago)\n\nCurrent bi
oacoustic monitoring technologies cost $600-$1,000+ per device and require
manual data retrieval and maintenance by experts, preventing real-time in
sights and limiting deployment scale. We develop a prototype autonomous mo
nitoring and detection system that streams high-quality audio in real time
, while drastically reducing costs and operational overhead. \n\nOur appro
ach combines Listener, a $375 solar-powered recording device built with ES
P32 and AudioMoth, with Aggregator, a $210 Raspberry Pi 5-based hub that c
ollects streams from multiple Listeners over WiFi HaLow while performing l
ocal inference using Cornell BirdNET. The system eliminates manual retriev
al through continuous streaming, supports 25 simultaneous Listeners per Ag
gregator, and provides integration for visualization and storage. We succe
ssfully deployed the system at organic vineyards in Michigan, demonstratin
g its practical viability. \n\nOur poster presents the system architecture
, real-time metrics and analysis results, power consumption benchmarks, an
d cost comparisons to highlight how this solution enables biodiversity mon
itoring at unprecedented scale.\n\nTag: Research & ACM SRC Posters\n\nRegi

esearch Centre; Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisati
