SUMMARY:Shipping HPC Ecosystems Across Platforms: Portable and Composable
 HPC Clusters as Code
DESCRIPTION:German Felipe Giraldo Villa, Théo Grivel, George Ioannidis, Ed
ita Kizinevic, Carolina Lindqvist, Nicolas Litchinko, Pablo Llopis, Antoni
o Javier Russo, and Gilles Fourestey (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Laus
anne)\n\nHigh performance computing systems require intricate platform-spe
cific stacks and configurations, which poses a challenge for reproducing t
he same HPC ecosystem on a different platform, a key requirement for geo-r
edundancy, business continuity, and urgent computing. We present a method
for declaratively defining portable HPC ecosystems that can be deployed ra
pidly and reliably with a high degree of automation. Our model enables inf
rastructure-layer portability, going beyond existing cloud-native solution
 s.\n\nWe introduce a two-tiered modular abstraction framework: provider-sp
ecific lower-level modules that handle the implementation details; and pro
vider-agnostic high-level modules that define core infrastructure logic, d
esigned around the versatile software-defined clusters (vClusters) develop
ed at CSCS.\n\nTo evaluate our approach, we showcase a portable implementa
tion of the Weather and Climate HPC vCluster that runs on the Alps ecosyst
em, and deploy it on Google Cloud Platform. Our work demonstrates the effe
ctiveness of our declarative approach in migrating HPC systems across hete
rogeneous platforms.\n\nTag: Research & ACM SRC Posters\n\nRegistration Ca
