SUMMARY:High-Resolution Acoustic–Gravity Simulation for Tsunami Early Warn
ing in the Cascadia Subduction Zone
DESCRIPTION:Stefan Henneking, Sreeram Venkat, Omar Ghattas, and Milinda Fe
rnando (The University of Texas at Austin); Alice-Agnes Gabriel (Universit
y of California, San Diego (UCSD)); and John Camier, Veselin Dobrev, and T
zanio Kolev (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL))\n\nThis video
visualizes data obtained from large-scale computations of an acoustic–grav
ity model implemented with the MFEM finite element library and performed o
n the El Capitan supercomputer. The 3D high-fidelity model computes the co
upled ocean acoustic and surface gravity waves for a magnitude 8.7 earthqu
ake scenario spanning the full margin of the Cascadia subduction zone that
stretches 1,000 km from northern California to British Columbia. These c
omputations are fundamental to enabling a newly developed digital twin met
hodology for real-time warning of tsunamis. Specifically, this Bayesian in
version-based digital twin employs acoustic pressure data from seafloor se
nsors, along with 3D coupled acoustic–gravity wave equations, to infer ear
thquake-induced spatiotemporal seafloor motion in real time and forecast t
sunami propagation toward coastlines for early warning with quantified unc
ertainties. Details of this work are available in Henneking et al., 2025,
to appear in the Proceedings of SC25.\n\nTag: Art of HPC\n\nRecording: Not
Livestreamed, Not Recorded\n\nRegistration Category: Technical Program Re
g Pass, Workshop Reg Pass, Tutorial Reg Pass, Exhibits Reg Pass\n\n
