SUMMARY:Machine Dreaming
DESCRIPTION:Aileen Ng and Jon McCormack (Monash University, SensiLab)\n\nM
achine Dreaming is an interactive installation that explores the perceptua
l and social dynamic between humans and AI, highlighting the tensions and
intimacies that surface in the experience of being “seen” by these systems
. The video depicts a viewer interacting with the installation, watching a
s their image gradually transforms, shifting into AI’s “perception” of the
m, inviting reflection on what it means to be seen and interpreted by an L
LM. \n\nBy using real-time video and AI-generated visuals, Machine Dreamin
g initially reveals a recognizable reflection of the viewer themselves. As
the viewer moves within the space they notice their image gradually morph
into an alien-like intermediary state, to plant-like forms that move and
transform in real time. Though semi-ambiguous forms, the work allows for b
oth abstraction and coherence—as plants can appear both alien and organic,
yet beautiful simultaneously—lending itself to exploring unfamiliar yet r
esonant representations of the self.\n\nThe work simultaneously allows the
viewer to feel in control while also being subtly guided by the system as
the projection shifts back and forth from them into alien plant-like form
s based on their movements, gestures, and interaction with the installatio
 n. \n\nBy foregrounding this interplay between human presence and algorith
mic interpretation, Machine Dreaming highlights the conditions of being se
en and mediated by intelligent systems. The work prompts viewers to reflec
t on their relationship to AI and how perception, agency, and representati
on are negotiated with these systems.\n\nTag: Art of HPC\n\nRecording: Not
