SUMMARY:Destination Earth: The Climate Change Adaptation Digital Twin
DESCRIPTION:Ioan Hadade (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast
s (ECMWF)); Daniel Klocke (Max Planck Institute for Meteorology); Jussi En
kovaara and Tuomas Lunttila (CSC - IT Center for Science); Thomas Rackow (
European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF)); Jan Frederik
Engels and Claudia Frauen (Deutsche Klimarechenzentrum (DKRZ)); René Redle
r (Max Planck Institute for Meteorology); Jenni Kontkanen (CSC - IT Center
for Science); Thomas Jung and Dmitry Sein (Alfred Wegener Institute); Iri
na Sandu, Balthasar Reuter, Nils Wedi, and Sebastian Milinski (European Ce
ntre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF)); Francisco Doblas Reyes,
Miguel Castrillo, Mario Acosta, and Sergi Girona (Barcelona Supercomputing
Center); and Pekka Manninen (CSC - IT Center for Science)\n\nWe present t
he first digital twin framework that operationalizes the production of mul
ti-decadal, global climate projections at kilometer-scale resolution, deve
loped within the European Union’s Destination Earth initiative. Using thre
e coupled Earth system models and selected impact-sector applications, we
have built end-to-end workflows for both regular and on-demand climate pro
jections on two EuroHPC supercomputers, LUMI and MareNostrum5. These workf
lows produced the first-ever multi-decadal simulations at 5 km resolution
across all major Earth system components, using the same output parameters
and grid, and achieving a production throughput of 0.6 simulated years pe
r day and a climate data portfolio of 6.6 petabytes. We demonstrate the sc
alability of two of these Earth system models across both CPU- and GPU-bas
ed systems at global resolutions up to 1 km, across atmosphere, ocean, lan
d, and sea-ice, and report record-breaking full-machine performance on LUM
I and MareNostrum5 of up to 97 simulated days per day at 1 km resolution.\
