SUMMARY:Software Engineer II – Backend (Richland, WA)
DESCRIPTION:At PNNL, our core capabilities are divided among major departm
ents that we refer to as Directorates within the Lab, focused on a specifi
c area of scientific research or other function, with its own leadership t
eam and dedicated budget. \n\n \n\nOur Science & Technology directorates
include National Security, Earth and Biological Sciences, Physical and Com
putational Sciences, and Energy and Environment. In addition, we have an E
nvironmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a Department of Energy, Office
of Science user facility housed on the PNNL campus. \n\n \n\nThe National
Security Directorate (NSD) drives science-based, mission-focused solution
s to take on complex, real-world threats to our nation and the world. \n\n
\n\nThe AI and Data Analytics Division, part of the National Security Dir
ectorate, combines profound domain expertise and creative integration of a
dvanced hardware and software to deliver computational solutions that addr
ess complex data and analytic challenges. Working in multidisciplinary tea
ms, we connect foundational research to engineering to operations, providi
ng the tools to innovate quickly and field results faster. Our strengths a
re integrated across the data analytics lifecycle, from data acquisition a
nd management to analysis and decision support. \n\n\nResponsibilities\n\n
SOLVING THE HARDEST PROBLEMS IN NATIONAL SECURITY\n\nProtecting U.S. resid
ents and visitors requires sophisticated technological solutions to counte
r increasingly complex, AI-enabled threats. As adversaries deploy autonomo
us systems, coordinate multi-domain operations, and leverage advanced AI c
apabilities, our capabilities must evolve to match this complexity. The PN
NL national security mission employs our expert engineering talent—self-dr
iven innovators who thrive in ambiguity—to architect and deliver next-gene
ration AI systems, multi-intelligence fusion platforms, and large-scale an
alytics capabilities that form the backbone of our nation's security infra
structure.\n\n \n\nTHE CHALLENGE IS REAL. THE PROBLEMS ARE HARD. THE IMPAC
T IS IMMEDIATE\n\nYou'll tackle problems that don't exist elsewhere, from
detecting and preventing smuggling of drugs and contraband to correlating
petabytes of multi-modal intelligence data to solve National Security Prob
lems. Every system, every algorithm, and every deployment you support dire
ctly strengthens our nation's security posture. This work demands relentle
ss drive—the kind of engineer who sees obstacles as puzzles to solve and t
reats mission success as personal responsibility.\n\n \n\nPNNL is at the f
orefront of advanced AI engineering, driving innovation in areas like real
-time multi-intelligence processing, petabyte-scale data management, and n
ext-generation AI architectures for national security applications. We are
seeking a motivated Software Engineer to join our dynamic team and contri
bute to cutting-edge projects that shape the future of critical technology
. In this role, you'll work alongside experienced engineers to design, bui
ld, and optimize scalable systems for processing multi-modal intelligence
data at a remarkable scale and speed. This is a unique opportunity to grow
your skills in AI/ML engineering, data orchestration, and system architec
ture while delivering impactful solutions in a fast-paced environment wher
e agility and reliability are key.\n\n \n\nAPPLYING YOUR ENGINEERING EXPER
TISE TO CHALLENGES IMPACTING NATIONAL SECURITY\n\nAs a Software Engineer o
n PNNL's Software Engineering and Architectures (SEA) team, you'll contrib
ute to mission-critical AI systems, help build enterprise-scale data platf
orms, and gain hands-on experience with some of the nation's most sophisti
cated intelligence and security applications. You'll receive mentorship fr
om senior engineers, collaborate with research scientists, and see your co
de deployed in production systems that serve national security missions.\n
 \n \n\nWhat You'll Build & Learn:\n\nAI Systems Development – Contribute t
o agentic AI implementations, work with LLM integrations, learn MLOps best
  practices on real-world applications\nIntelligence Platform Development –
Build components for multi-INT fusion systems, develop GEOINT processing
tools, contribute to threat analysis platforms\nData Engineering – Develop
data pipelines, build analytics workflows, contribute to cloud-native dat
