SUMMARY:2026 Luis W Alvarez and Grace M Hopper Postdoctoral Fellowships
DESCRIPTION:2026 Luis W Alvarez and Grace M Hopper Postdoctoral Fellows
hips - 104992
\nDivision: AC-Computing\n\nLuis W. Alvarez Postdoctoral
Fellowship and Admiral Grace M. Hopper Postdoctoral Fellowship in Computin
g Sciences\n\nThe Computing Sciences Area (hyperlink to https://cs.lbl
.gov/) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (hyperlink to https://www.
lbl.gov/) is now accepting applications for two distinguished postdoctoral
 fellowships in Computing Sciences:\n

Luis W. Alvarez Postdoctoral
Fellowship, and\n
Admiral Grace M. Hopper Postdoctoral Fellowship
\
n\nResearchers in computer science, mathematics, data science, or any comp
utational science discipline who have received their Ph.D. and have comple
ted no more than three years of postdoctoral work are encouraged to apply.
Only one (1) application is needed, and it will be considered for both p
ostdoctoral fellowships.\n\nThe successful candidates will participate in
research activities in computer science, mathematics, data science, or any
computational science discipline of interest to the Computing Sciences Ar
ea and Berkeley Lab. Alvarez Fellows apply advances in computer science, m
athematics, computational science, data science, machine learning or AI to
computational modeling, simulations, and advanced data analytics for scie
ntific discovery in materials science, biology, astronomy, environmental s
cience, energy, particle physics, genomics, and other scientific domains.
Hopper Fellows concentrate on the development and optimization of scientif
ic and engineering applications leveraging high-speed network capability p
rovided by the Energy Sciences Network or run on next-generation high perf
ormance computing and data systems hosted by the National Energy Research
Scientific Computing Center at Berkeley Lab.\n\nSince its founding in 2002
, Berkeley Lab’s Luis W. Alvarez Postdoctoral Fellowship (go.lbl.gov/alvar
ez) has cultivated exceptional early career scientists who have gone on to
make outstanding contributions to computer science, mathematics, data sci
ence, and computational sciences. The Admiral Grace Hopper Postdoctoral Fe
llowship (go.lbl.gov/hopper) was first awarded in 2015 with the goal of en
abling early career scientists to make outstanding contributions in comput
er science and high-performance computing (HPC) research.\n\nAbout Comp
uting Sciences at Berkeley Lab:
\nWhether running extreme-scale sim
ulations on a supercomputer or applying machine-learning or data analysis
to massive datasets, scientists today rely on advances in and integration
across applied mathematics, computer science, and computational science, a
s well as large-scale computing and networking facilities, to increase our
understanding of ourselves, our planet, and our universe. Berkeley Lab's
Computing Sciences Area researches, develops, and deploys new tools and te
chnologies to meet these needs and to advance research in our core capabil
ities of applied mathematics, computer science, data science, and computat
ional science. In addition to fundamental advances in our core capabilitie
s, we impact such areas as astrophysics and cosmology, accelerator physics
, chemical science and materials science, combustion, fusion energy, nucle
ar physics, biology, climate change, and HPC systems and network technolog
y. Research areas in Computing Sciences include but are not limited to:\n<
ul>
Developing scientific applications and software technologies for ex
treme-scale and energy-efficient computing\n
Developing mathematical mo
deling for complex scientific problems\n
Designing algorithms to improv
e the performance of scientific applications\n
Researching digital and
post-digital computer architectures for science\n
Developing and advanc
ing extreme-scale scientific data management, analysis, and visualization\
n
Developing and advancing next-generation machine learning, AI, and da
ta science approaches for science\n
Advancing quantum computing and net
working technologies, software, algorithms and applications\n
Evaluatin
g or developing new and promising HPC systems and networking technologies\
n
Researching methods to control and manage next-generation network\n<l
i>Managing scientific data and workflows in distributed environments
\
n\nQualifications:\n

Requires a Ph.D. in computer science, m
athematics, computational science, or related discipline.\nCandidates must
have no more than 3 years of Postdoctoral Researcher or similar experienc
e.\n
Expertise with advanced algorithms, software techniques, HPC syste
ms and/or networking in a related research field.\n
Demonstrated creati
vity and the ability to perform independent research.\n
Demonstrated ex
cellence in a related research fiel\n
Ability to develop new cross-disc
iplinary partnerships that use advanced computational and/or mathematical
techniques to produce unique lab capabilities.\n
Excellent communicatio
n skills with the ability to facilitate communications and collaborations
with internal and external stakeholders.
\n\nAdditional Desired Qua
lifications:\n

Knowledge of advanced computing and high-perform
ance computing.
\n\nApplication Process:\n
\n
As part of
your application process, you must upload and submit the following materia
ls with your online application.
\n
\n
Cover letter</li
