SUMMARY:Rethink Computing: Pioneering Next-Level Architectures for Sustain
 able AI and HPC
DESCRIPTION:Bob Sorensen (Hyperion Research); Dieter Kranzlmüller (Leibniz
Supercomputing Centre (LRZ)); Michela Taufer (University of Tennessee, Kn
oxville); Michael Förtsch (Q.ANT GmbH); and Rick L. Stevens (Argonne Natio
nal Laboratory (ANL))\n\nAs AI and high performance computing (HPC) demand
s surge, traditional electronic architectures are hitting their limits. Th
is panel explores the next wave of computing, spotlighting photonic comput
ing—a revolutionary approach that uses light instead of electrons to achie
ve unprecedented energy efficiency, bandwidth, and computational density.
We will position photonic computing within a broader landscape of emerging
technologies, including heterogeneous ecosystems that blend digital chips
(CPUs, GPUs, TPUs) and analogue or quantum systems. Panelists will examin
e the challenges of power consumption, data movement, and integration with
current infrastructures, offering insights into how next-generation archi
tectures can meet AI and HPC demands while advancing environmental sustain
ability. The discussion will highlight key steps for moving photonic compu
ting from lab-scale innovation to industrial-scale deployment, and address
the status, challenges, and opportunities for integrating these technolog
ies into today’s computing infrastructure and industry standards.\n\nTag:
