SUMMARY:Julia for HPC
DESCRIPTION:William Godoy (Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)), Johannes
Blaschke (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL)), Mose Giordano (U
niversity College London (UCL)), Rabab Alomairy (Massachusetts Institute o
f Technology (MIT)), Philip Fackler (Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL))
, and Raye Kimmerer (Princeton University)\n\nThis hands-on tutorial intro
duces participants to the Julia language and demonstrates its growing role
in scientific computing and high performance computing (HPC). We will giv
e a brief introduction to the Julia language, targeting a beginner audienc
 e. Participants will gain familiarity with Julia’s syntax, multiple dispat
ch, package environment, and code parallelization. Following the introduct
ion we will dive into Julia for HPC, showcasing its ability to express hig
h-performance workloads with minimal effort. We will explore Julia’s suppo
rt for shared-memory parallelism using multithreading, NVIDIA and AMD GPUs
 , distributed-memory parallelism via MPI.jl, and performance portability l
ayers. Julia combines the productivity of high-level languages with low-le
vel performance aspects, thanks to its LLVM-based JIT compilation. Attende
es will have hands-on access to NERSC’s systems to explore hands-on exampl
es involving computation, communication, parallel I/O, and data analysis.
All materials will be made publicly available, and we will maintain a Slac
k channel to offer continued support and answer participants’ questions af
ter the event.\n\nRecording: Livestreamed, Recorded\n\nRegistration Catego
