SUMMARY:Invited Talk: Weather and Climate Codes in the AI Era
DESCRIPTION:Torsten Hoefler (ETH Zürich, Swiss National Supercomputing Cen
 tre (CSCS))\n\nWe will start the discussion with a landmark achievement: t
 he first global simulation of the full Earth system at a 1.25 km grid spac
 ing. Our talk will focus on how we used the Alps supercomputer to model th
 e intricate flow of energy, water, and carbon across the atmosphere, ocean
 , and land. We will detail the heterogeneous setup and optimization techni
 ques that enabled us to achieve an exceptional time compression of 82.5 si
 mulated days per day, allowing for extensive studies of the Earth system. 
 Throughout the talk, we focus on programmability and performance of the la
 nguages used and the frameworks employed. Specifically, we will describe t
 he use of the Data-Centric Parallel Programming (DaCe) framework developed
  in Switzerland. We show how this reduced code complexity by half while in
 creasing both performance and portability. Finally, we will put this all i
 nto context of emerging AI methods and systems and provide an outlook into
  how to combine physics-based simulation and data-driven AI methods.\n\nRe
