Dani Ushizima, Ph.D., is a senior scientist at Berkeley Lab and affiliated faculty with the Bakar Institute at UC San Francisco and the Berkeley Institute for Data Science at UC Berkeley. She leads the ML team for the Center of Advanced Mathematics for Energy Research Applications (CAMERA) in AMCRD, where she has been pioneering advanced algorithms for scientific data analysis since 2007. Her team develops computer vision and pattern recognition software applications that leverage unique datasets from various microscopes (X-ray, electron, optical) for quantitative research across materials science, plant growth, and biomedical imaging. Dani’s work also extends to applying advanced AI/ML models, such as transformers for natural language processing (BERTeley), and developing tools like pyCBIR for image recommendations. Her accolades include the DOE Early Career Fellowship (2016), LBNL awards (2017 from Director, 2018 from WSEC, and 2021 from ALS), recognition as a Top-25 Latina Scientist (2021), and the 2023 Precision Medicine World Conference Pioneer Award for AI in Alzheimer’s disease.
