Paola Buitrago

Biography
Paola Buitrago is the Founding Director of the Artificial Intelligence and Big Data group at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, which is a joint effort of Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. She is the principal investigator of NSF-funded Neocortex, an AI-specialized advanced computing system, and NSF-funded Bridges-2, a heterogenous production-level supercomputer. Her efforts are focused on advancing and supporting the convergence of HPC, AI and Big Data. Paola’s background includes research in deep learning, large-scale data, and workflow management for high-energy physics international collaborations at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. Paola has experience developing courses in machine learning, simulation, and optimization at the university level. She is passionate about education in technology and launched an education-focused startup which has been active for over a decade. Her academic formation includes degrees and studies in chemical engineering, systems and computing engineering, machine learning, and electrical and computing engineering.
