Sergio Afonso received his B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. in computer science from the University of La Laguna (Tenerife, Spain), in 2015, 2017 and 2022, respectively. During that time, he completed internships and research visits at IBM Research (UK), Princeton University (USA), The University of Texas at Austin (USA), Inria (France), Wooptix (Spain), Allinea Software (UK), IT4Innovations (Czech Republic) and ITER (Spain), working on topics around HPC, compilers and parallel programming model’s design. He is currently a Senior Member of Technical Staff at AMD, where he focuses on OpenMP target support for the Flang compiler, as well as on the design and development of the OpenMP MLIR dialect. Other prior work experience include working on an MLIR-based AI compiler at Cadence Design Systems. His research interests include compilers, programming models for parallel computing, performance optimization and portability, GPU acceleration and HPC. Other interests include playing guitar and drums, music composition and recording, cinematography, photography and motor sports.
