Quentin F. Stout is a professor of computer science and engineering at the University of Michigan. Since 1985 he has been doing research on, and teaching about, parallel computing on a wide range of architectures and system configurations. He and his students have worked on a variety of applications such as car crash simulation, adaptive clinical trials, environmental remediation, climate modeling, space weather modeling, statistical imputation, and machine learning. At the university he has been the director of the Center for Parallel Computing, co-founded the Advanced Computer Architecture Lab, and helped create the Scientific Computing degree. He and collaborators also developed some teaching modules used by fifth graders, where the entire class acted as a parallel computer and learned about algorithms, breaking a problem into pieces that could be done concurrently, and also learned that computers are sometimes faulty.
