Mario Acosta

Biography
Mario Acosta is a leading researcher at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, where he co-leads the Computational Earth Sciences (CES) group. His work focuses on high performance computing for Earth system models, with emphasis on performance, energy efficiency, and sustainability. He coordinates the European Centre of Excellence for Weather and Climate, ESiWACE3, and plays key roles in flagship initiatives such as Destination Earth (Climate Digital Twin) and other Horizon Europe projects. Internationally, he contributes to the WCRP-WIP panel, leading the Carbon Footprint Task Team for CMIP. He earned his PhD in computer science and is also engaged in community governance, advancing benchmarking, workflows, and metrics for climate models on cutting-edge supercomputers, while mentoring the next generation of scientists in HPC and climate modeling.
