Biography
Balthasar Reuter is a Senior Computational Scientist at ECMWF, working on the Performance and Portability Team in the ECMWF Research Department. Balthasar contributes to porting the Integrated Forecasting System (IFS) to current and future HPC architectures, including the adaptation to GPUs, and he leads the HPC adaptation workstream at ECMWF in the European Commission's Destination Earth initiative. In the context of this work, he investigates modern software engineering techniques such as source-to-source translation and code generation to bring performance portability and accelerator readiness into numerical weather prediction models. He holds a PhD from Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) and master’s degrees in scientific computing and computational engineering from KTH Stockholm and FAU, respectively.
