Nils Wedi obtained his PhD from the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich, Germany. His 30-year career at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) encapsulates a diverse range of technical and scientific aspects of Earth system modeling. He is the Digital Technology Lead for Destination Earth at ECMWF. Destination Earth operates high-precision digital models of the Earth system on Europe's largest high-performance computers. So-called "digital twins" model, monitor, and simulate natural phenomena and related human activities. Prior to this appointment, Nils led ECMWF's Earth system modeling section. He actively collaborates with researchers worldwide, for example through engaging in various activities of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), linking weather and climate simulation research.
