Biography
Dr. Vijayalakshmi Saravanan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at Tyler and also serves as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). She has also served as a Visiting Faculty Scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), New York. Her postdoctoral research was conducted at the University at Buffalo (SUNY) and the University of Waterloo under the prestigious Schlumberger Faculty for the Future Fellowship (2015–2017). She earned her Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering through the Erasmus Mundus EU-Government Fellowship, with research jointly completed at Mälardalen University(MDH) in Sweden and Ryerson University in Canada. Her core research areas include high-performance computing with AI (HPC-AI), power-aware processor design, big data analytics, and software/hardware co-design for multicore systems.
Dr. Saravanan also served on editorial and program committees for prestigious venues such as Pattern Recognition Letters, GHC, SIGCSE, and Springer-sponsored conferences. An ACM Distinguished Speaker, she has held leadership roles as Chair of the IEEE WIE Affinity Group (VIT, 2009–2015) and as a Board Member of N2WOMEN. She also organized the CWIDCA Workshop at MICRO 2024. Notably, she co-authored the transatlantic DISCOVER-US joint vision paper on distributed computing and swarm intelligence, presented at HiPEAC 2025, and currently serves on the DISCOVER-US Steering Committee, where her research focuses on AI, distributed computing, and edge–cloud continuum systems. She is actively involved in U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)-funded efforts, including the SRP-HPC Fellowship (2022–2023). As Principal Investigator, she currently leads a DOE ASCR-funded project that explores HPC and machine learning-driven storage solutions for multimodal scientific data.
Dr. Saravanan is a dedicated advocate for STEM engagement, such as Women in Big Data, Women in Architecture, and Women in HPC. She is a recipient of the EU-Horizon SoBigData++ award and the SC24 Women in HPC Travel Fellowship. Her work has been featured in HPCwire and highlighted in a WHPC SC24 live interview, where she shared her vision for integrating AI and HPC while advancing scientific computing.
