DescriptionWe are seeking a dynamic Senior AI Researcher to drive innovative AI research initiatives in support of NNSA missions. This exciting role blends basic research and real-world context to solve some of the most complex and cutting-edge challenges in NNSA mission areas. The role focuses on advancing national security through the development of next-generation AI capabilities.
Responsibilities Include:
Leading technical direction of high-impact research projects that apply advanced AI methods to solve complex national security challenges across diverse data types and operational contexts.
Leading development of compelling, competitive research proposals that align with evolving priorities.
Developing and adapting AI/machine learning (ML) techniques for varied data modalities, such as text, image, tabular, sensor readings, to support real-world applications in national security.
Building and leading interdisciplinary teams, fostering collaboration across technical domains.
Reproducing, evaluating, and extending state-of-the-art AI methods ensuring scientific rigor and mission relevance.
Maintaining awareness of emerging trends in AI and national security to shape future research directions and identify new opportunities for impact.
This position is based in either Richland, WA and requires an onsite presence.

RequirementsMinimum Qualifications:
BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in AI/ML/DL in applied science/research for national security challenges.
Experience as a principal investigator leading research efforts that apply ML and AI to challenges that address NNSA mission areas.
Experience developing proposals for novel AI/ML research projects.
Expertise in nuclear nonproliferation, safeguards, material science.
Experience in Python development and common associated libraries (e.g., Pandas, Numpy, Scipy).
Experience and proficiency developing, training, and testing ML models in frameworks like PyTorch.
Active DOE Q clearance and ability to maintain such clearance.
Active TS/SCI clearance and ability to maintain such clearance.
Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Additional Information
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.
A security clearance background investigation includes review of your employment, education, financial, and criminal history, as well as interviews with you and your personal references, neighbors, and co-workers to determine trustworthiness, reliability, and loyalty to the United States. The investigation also examines your foreign connections, drug and alcohol use, foreign influence, and overall conduct.

Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the applicant selected for hire is subject to pre-employment drug testing, and post-employment random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy if non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months cannot be demonstrated.
Testing Designated Position
This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
